Introduction

Industrial automation is moving fast, and the line between a traditional PLC and a true motion-and-automation platform is getting sharper every year. The Robox RP2 is the company's flagship Programmable Automation Controller (PAC) - a compact device that combines high-axis-count motion control, industrial-grade connectivity, and Industry 4.0 readiness in a single unit. Today, Velankani has acquired the technology and Manufacturing the Motion Controller in India at its own Electronics Manufacturing Unit based out of Veerasandra, Electronics city Phase II. Let us understand what RP2 does, how it differs from a conventional PLC, and where it adds real value on the shop floor.

What Is the Robox RP2?

RP2 sits at the top of Robox's compact controller range (alongside RP0 and RP1). It is built on an Altera Cyclone V SoC with a dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 processor paired with an FPGA, plus a dedicated auxiliary processor for connectivity. This hardware split lets RP2 handle demanding, high-axis motion tasks while simultaneously managing networking, diagnostics, and IIoT communication without one workload starving the other.

Taking Industrial, Robotic, and Assembly Automation Further

  • High-speed Ether CAT motion: RP2 drives fieldbus cyclic data exchange at up to 1 kHz (1 Millisecond cycle time), enough for synchronized multi-axis robotic and packaging lines.

  • Scales to dozens of axes: from simple 1-2 axis machines to sophisticated cells with a dozen-plus coordinated axes, using the same RDE programming environment.

  • Native connectivity: dual dedicated Ether CAT master ports, a general-purpose Ethernet/WAN port for factory-network and Industry 4.0 integration, and built-in Wi-Fi for direct smartphone or tablet access to an onboard web server.

  • Modular expansion: AXIOLINE I/O modules snap directly onto the controller, so machine builders scale I/O without extra wiring cabinets.

  • Multi-language programming: Ladder, Robox's own R3 structured-text language, and C++, all inside one IDE (RDE) — giving both classic automation engineers and software-first developers a path in.

  • Real applications: RP2 and its miniaturized sibling uRP2 are already deployed in Industrial Robots, packaging, palletizing, glass, wood, marble, tissue, humanoids and AGV applications, and in Ether CAT interoperability tests with third-party drives.

RP2 vs. a Conventional PLC

A traditional PLC is built primarily to scan discrete and analog I/O in a cyclic loop — reliable but generally optimized for logic and slower control loops rather than tight multi-axis coordination. RP2 is a PAC: it runs an internal real-time OS (RTE) capable of up to eight parallel general-purpose tasks alongside as many as 32 high-priority "Rules," which are dedicated periodic routines for motion, executable at up to 1 kHz. In practice, PLC-style logic tasks and true motion control run side by side on the same controller instead of requiring separate motion and logic hardware. Add native Ether CAT master, integrated Wi-Fi/web server access, and OPC-UA/Ethernet-IP/Modbus-TCP support out of the box, and RP2 covers ground that typically demands a PLC plus a separate motion controller plus a separate gateway.
